- West African Drumming
Workshop
- at Marimba House
- over the New years
gathering.
-
- With
- Patrick Dilley of Team Spirit
in Cape Town.
- 4 day workshop / 27th to 30th December 2006
(There is still
space on this workshop.)
These particular workshops
are always well attended and draw people who want to let go and
have some fun. There is a space limit of about 35 drummers. We
will conclude the workshop giving a drumming performance, staring
all the participants on the evening of the last day (30th December).
For the seventh
year we will be holding a 4 day drumming workshop between Xmas
and New Year in the spectacular Marimba Starseed venue.
Participants will experience
the magic of learning to play a variety of African instruments
as a band (team), facilitated by Patrick Dilley, a Meta
Practitioner and drummer from Cape Town. There will be a strong
emphasis on having fun whilst learning.
This workshop is not
just about drumming and rhythm, it is also good for anyone who
works with people or teams. Patrick shows how we use rhythm to
teach concepts of teamwork and leadership. Facilitation
techniques relevant to everyday life are also presented (body
language, personal styles etc). Every morning the session opens
with a daily motivation and inspiration from the group. The emphasis
of this workshop deals a lot with communication.
Musicianship, especially
in an African context, is very much about communicating
and through certain exercises Patrick will show how an understanding
of communication can enhance our music and level of fun! Participants
will also be divided into groups as part of the process and will
create their own rhythm.
Integrated rhythms
and technique are taught and participants will learn at least
one full song including all the instruments like dun dun, bass
drum, djembe, bell and shaker. The song chosen includes pieces
for advanced and beginner players alike.
The structure of the
day will be such that participants will have the opportunity
during the evenings to have a facilitated jam around the fire.
Advanced players and those wishing to improve their facilitation
skills will be able to practise their playing and facilitation
skills throughout the workshop.
There will be a presentation
of vocal and singing techniques from a professional singer and
support from guest musicians.
At the end of the workshop
participants should be relaxed and feel more confident about
their playing and communication abilities. The workshop will
culminate with a performance by the newly created band!
For anyone who is linked
in any way to drumming and rhythm be it as a teacher/facilitator,
a performer or simply someone who enjoys jamming with friends
this workshop will be of enormous value.
